Night Shift Kennels- 06-08-2008

Eric I am sure this suggestion will include a huge undertaking. but i wonder if it would be possible to add degrees to a dogs registration papers. then when a dog earns a degree the owner could request a new set of papers to reflect this. Even if it requires a fee for the new copy, similar to what is required for a transfer. It would also be great if we had the means to print pedigree forms with the same information. The pedigree forms can become inportant when deciding what dogs to make crosses with. currently there is no way to determine what breeding a dog has except by people providing info the way Jim has for you I know this would be better posted elsewhere on the board. but wanted to make sure you saw it and get some input on it

Hi Wade Moved this post to hopefully get more discussion. I have mentioned offering pedigrees in the future. You are right it would be a lot of work in the setup. I have self-taught myself how to use the access software we use for the database, but I am just now comfortable with using it. I still don't know that programing part but have managed to figure out a couple of issues. No one however, has come up with the idea of adding Rabbit Champion (RCH) or Bench Champion (BCH) to the name of the hound in the AHBA, like they do in the AKC. I think it's a good idea and wouldn't be a lot of work at this point. We don't have that many hounds moving up from year to year. Hopefully that will change. I would be all for it. Brings in more funds for the AHBA as well. Someone mention not long ago giving access to a searchable database on line. I'm sure its possible for the right amount of money, But I don't think the AHBA will have that amount anytime soon. The best resource most have available is the history available on the website which I keep finding bits and pieces to add, or the long time members as you said. I would be happy to print or email trial results or the little line info I have to anyone needing it to enhance their breeding choices.

Eric, Adding the title to the cert wouldn't be that difficult. Also, we could easily create reports that you could ftp to the web. You dont want to incur the cost of putting the DB online. and now that you have had worked with the DB for a while , we should regroup and discuss any changes...

Eric Figg- 06-09-2008

Marc That would be great! Let me put a new list together and I will contact you after we post the summer hunts, so we have time to work on it without update interuptions. Thanks

pedigree
Wade: Since for most people AHBA serves as a membership dual registry along with AKC, parentage, is often missing. If you would send me the sire and dam of your dogs I will see if I can help you at all. If they are AKC registered you can use one of the commercial pedigree services that advertise for as little as $10 for 3 generations. I agree it is very important to breeding. Especially if you are like myself giving emphasis to the female side and to line breeding.

mundellm- 06-10-2008

Just so people know ... Like Jim stated the DB is missing alot of information that would be needed to get a pedigree. Also, the program used for our database isn't really the best tool for creating a pedigree. It would require a lot of rework to the database....a lot If your dogs are AKC registered, you can use the AKC site to create a pedigree. It only cost a couple of dollars and its very easy to use. If the club was to look at creating pedigrees, I suggest getting another product.

Night Shift Kennels- 06-10-2008

Thanks for all the input from everybody, I have the pedigrees for all of my dogs from AKC, I was simply making a suggestion in reguards to improvment to our current registry for our dogs. I figured it would include a huge undertaking. one added point is simply if someone buys an AHBA registered puppy that is not AKC registired or any other registry for for that matter, they have no way of knowing if the lineage includes any degree winner, this is my main basis of brnging this topic up Thanks again everybody

check this out ---- http://www.animaltrac.com/anped.html I have animaltrac4 and it does a great job -- I believe this group would modify if necessary to handle titles, if needed. My version does add titles, but the win records don't work with our system. The medical section is excellent

I have recently purchased two dogs from Jeremy Freeze out of WV. The male is a grandson of Brian's bunny bomber... the female is out of the Tid Bar Lines Jethro Bodine and Barbie Doll... Having information concerning AHBA Titles and Championships is important for any breeder. Even if you have a database of all AHBA Regestered Dogs who have earned a Field Championship or Bench Championship Listed in a Word or PDF file through the Past Years World Hunt. There are many programs that offer a breeder an oportunity to print out their own pedigree and add the championships to the pedigree form. But there has to be one place to gather the information from. I have been researching these bloodlines and see some great dogs listed on the AKC Pedigrees throughout the AHBA history of HOY's on the Website. I just want to make sure that my eyes are not fooling me etc... and that these are not just flukes because no other hound showed up to hunt that day etc... having a AHBA Hall of Champions that is researchable or printable on the AHBA site would be an excellent tool for the furtherment of the Associations goals.

Eric Figg- 06-16-2008

Thanks Bigeagle Printable maybe, searchable not for a while. It would mean having the database available on the website. We would need someone much better than me or a lot of money. The database has info from the year 2000 forward. It only shows the dogs class by looking at the trial results and at the class entered at each hunt. There is no report that will show a dogs title based on it's name or number. Marc Do you know if the database has a query like that, I can't think of one. I'm sure it would be possible to make a report, put it in PFD format and update it once a year as the dogs move through the classes. But we would have to add a title/class to each dogs info in the database all the way to 2000. Then you would have a printable one that could be posted to the website.

on the one beagle website they have a pedigree creator. don't know what is entailed with getting one going on here but someone in the know could ask. espomagazine.com now just remember the ped's are only as honest as the person entering them. me personally i don't feel that we should be acting like a dog registery, that's why the akc and the ukc are out there. if your dogs are akc u can get a 5 gen. ped. for 8 bucks. now as for not registering i perfer to use akc cause of the other basset formats i attend, plus i know most of the dogs and can get a ped. quick to see for my own purpose.

bigeagle- 06-17-2008

You are correct that there are free pedigree software for the individual to make their own.. and a pedigree is only as honest as the person entering the data. Even with a pedigree in hand, you can never trust even an AKC pedigree to tell you what a mating will produce. Genetics is a science that too few breeders today really understand. Just because a dog has feild champions in their background does not mean they they will be a feild chamipion. I will say they have the potential to become a feild champion, but what an owner or handler does with the dog in training and conditioning is an X factor in the sport of feild trialing. A dog that is in good physical condition and has had good training can become a feild champion without the pedigree given the right circumstances.. Eric all I was talking about is a list of feild champions and bench champions.. I may have used the word database by mistake.... The AHBA has it's Hall of Fame and Hound of the Year Standings online etc... Once a dog becomes a field champion or bench champion they are always a champion.. they have obtained a goal etc... Having a listing of the dogs in the AHBA program that have reached these goals would give credence or weight to the program. That is why I mentioned the Hall of Chamions or whatever you would want to call it and a PDF or Word File by the Year would be all that would be needed. People who are serious about their pedigrees would print out the list yearly or as needed for their own purposes.. I know of instances of questionable breeders ( I have been around a while with beagles) who would "Make Up" championships on pedigrees to impress buyers who were not in tune with what actually went on in the feild....When I first started with Beagles, I ran into a guy that had dogs that could not find their own shadow, but were listed on his own pedigrees as feild champions. Needless to say I learned the hard and expensive way not to trust anything on paper until you physically see the dog run agiants other dogs... Here is a question that I have maybe you can answer. What makes an AHBA Feild Champion? Is it the number of wins? Or does it take a number of points scored over time?

bigeagle- 06-17-2008

Eric... What type of software are you using for the database?

Eric Figg- 06-17-2008

Our DB is created in MS Access The problem is that the table hasn't been set up to store a dogs title. This is one of the things we are looking at changing. Here are the rules for Champion and Grand Champion. A. To qualify as a Rabbit Champion a hound must place first in at least 3 sanctioned hunts and earns a total of 100 points. Not more than 50 points may come from 1 club. A. AHBA Scoring for Rabbit Champion in hunts where 10 or more hounds are entered; 1st Place, 40 points; 2nd Place, 30 Points; 3rd Place, 25 Points; 4th Place, 20 Points; 5th Place, 15 Points; 6th Place, 10 Points; 7th Place, 10 points 8th Place, 10 Points; 9th Place, 5 Points; 10th Place, 5 Points. B. To qualify as Grand Rabbit champion a hound must have 5 first place wins in a Champion Class in sanctioned hunts. Not more than 3 wins can come from one club. A complete explaination is on the website.
