Finally opened up.
My dog sadie mae finnally has started opening up some on rabbits. The weather here has been nice the last couple of weeks, so I have been able to get out and walk with her a bit. She loves to track, I have had my wife walk a trail and hide she always find her or me if I do the hiding. But she was still having problems opening on rabbits.
Well for the past two days, I have taken her out, I put her on a harness instead of a choker collar, She jumpped two rabbits out of one pile gave chase with her nose to the ground and started opening up some. Of course with two rabbits coming out of the hole she lost them after about two minutes, she started going back and forth, picked up the scent of one of the rabbits and got it cornered near a neighbors barn between the barn and a large wood pile, she slobbered all over that rabbit, :P I pulled her back to let the rabbit get away and run another day so to speak.
Last evening she went through the bushes and jumped a LARGE cotton tail that must have been eating good in the neighborhood. She chased that rabbit nose to the ground for a half an hour, the rabbit would hold up unmder a pile of tires, she would paw at it to get it to come out and away she would go. She pulled me for about a quarter mile back and forth around wood piles, bushes and trees. Sounding off and on on the rabbits.
I was worried that she would never open, a nieghbor of mind told me that she may never open as long as I used a choke type collar on her, he suggested going to a harness system. The locals here are pretty adimate about dogs being on a lead so until I can find a training pen or hunting camp around that will let me turn her losse I feel I am holding her back to much.
Are there any training pens in the Central PA area that anyone knows about?
:?:
There are plenty of beagle clubs in PA. You just got to find one that will let you join with a Basset. Check the AHRA web site at
http://www.arha.com/ if you find one close to you call them and ask. You can also look at the AKC web site to find a club. Stay away from brace clubs you wont stand a chance of joining with a Basset. I live about 2 hrs from you if you want to come down on a Saturday or Sunday and see what your dog will do. The club I belong to is totally fenced in I will gladly take you over so you could run your dog.
Fenced in....
That's what she needs...LOL
My main problem and why I got basset instead of getting back into beagles was to get a slwer dog I could keep up with. With my disability it is hard to keep up with even her at this point, but I thoughrly enjoy listening to a good dog run...
Our club has nice wide paths to walk. If we stay on top of the hill you would get to see and hear her run.
