Hello
I have a male Basset I acquired in July, he's now about 8 mos old. A friends granddaughter could no longer keep him and after a little prodding my husband said I could buy him. I came across this site looking for Basset info and even though I've never hunted or trained a hunting dog, I'm very interested, I know Obie is as well. We have 5 acres I walk with him several times a day ( on a 20 ft lead) and he spends the whole time with his nose to the ground...even lead me to a rabbit the other night, it was freshly killed by a neighborhood cat, but it was still a rabbit :). I'm working on him returning to me from a distance and will add down. What other commands are helpful?

Hello Sherry glad you logged on to this sight. What area of the country are you from? I may be able to you in touch with someone local to talk to. I live in Michigan and have been running bassets for 11 years with the AHBA. Great group of people.

Hello Sherry, Welome to the site, the only suggestions that i cam make as far as commands would be a command to so the dog will return to you. weather it be "come or heal or anyother word you want to use. This way you can easily catch your dog.

and dont forget the ever so popular " come here dummy " :D . at least thats what i use sometimes. ill have to tell you if you are interested in the AHBA i would highly reccomend it. i have been running bassets in the AHBA for about three years now and i have had more fun with it then i could have imagined.

Hi Sherry I am in missouri. Most hounds are turned loose to hunt on their own instinct. Other than the normal obiedance commands theres not a lot you need to teach him. I would try to teach him to hunt closer to me (Range) The distance he hunts from you and my favorite is " look in here". Welcome to the board!

We live in NW Indiana ( LaPorte Co. very close to New Buffalo MI ) Just working the way I have been seemed too easy, so I figured I must be missing something  So, I will keep up the obedience and letting him sniff around....though I think I need to find another spot, between wildlife and straycats the rabbit population has gotten a little thin in our yard. My kids raised rabbits in 4-H for 9 yrs but right now we're down to 2 Netherland Dwarfs...my daughter said I can't let Obie play with them  . Thank you all for the welcome and the info.

Sherry, Kevin Biery is in Frankfort Indiana, i am sure you would be more than welcome to let Obie run with his hounds if you want. There are also several guys in southern Michigan who have hounds who would also be thrilled to have you join up with them. I would invite you to run with me, but i am near Evansville, so that poses a small problem in logistics. TheNorth Regional is being held this weekend in Lawton, Michigan, not sure where that is in reguards to you, in case you would like to check out one of our events. There should be information posted on the board with directions to the club

I wish I could have gone, we were busy all weekend.

Night Shift Kennels- 11-03-2008

Kevin will have a hunt on December 13 and 14 in Frankfort. If you do not have any plans maybe you could attend then.

SherryA- 11-03-2008

I saw that, started making plans for it this morning :)

LOL, The Rabbit Hunter Mag has the hunt listed as Frankfort, KY so I contact Eric about it and find out it was a typo. KY would be the closest hunt near me so I was gonna make plans and go. That typo was a bummer.
