hey Ben how ru and Sam? good i hope. what type of kennel are you looking to do? above ground or on the ground?

samandben- 08-04-2007

Hey Billy! We're doing great. We wanted to do above ground.

mines cement on the ground, above ground i have not to much faith in for big dogs like bassets but some are on the market if you got the cash. as for homemade ones if you got the building skills you may do alright.i like cement on the ground for the eaiser waste clean up,also it will not be as hard on the dogs pads either. you going to Dean's hunt labor day or Batiava the week after? i should be at both if things don't go wrong,so i'll see there .

I made this kennel with some landscaping timbers, screws, and alot of constructional know how (luck). I made this for beagles but the same idea could be used on a bigger version. This one is 4ft X 8 ft. The roof of the box hindges up for access inside. Also, it is jst sitting on the ground so I can move it when I need to. This is what I use for my hounds. It is basically a 22ft X 12ft platform with two 10ftX10ftX6ft kennels on it. The planks are 1 1/2 inches apart. Works great for waste falling through and stays real clean. I hit it with a hosing every 2-3 days and works great. I through some lime under it every couple weeks and smell is next to nothing. I plan to cover the back half with a pavilion to do away with the tarps (temporary shade). A couple three gallon buckets for water and 25 lbs feeders makes every day life real easy. I have since this PIC sprayed around the edges to keep the weeds from growing up through. I am planning to make another set up like this one right next to it. I found the 10X10X6 works good for keeping 2 hound together in the summer and 3 in the winter.

Slingblade those are really nice pens, but i have to ask how tall they are? they look really high? Ben when it comes to kennels focus on budget first then when you realize you have went way over it go for whats best for you and your dogs. I have above ground and concrete both, and they both have advantages and disadvantages. My above are nice because the waste goes through the floor reducing clean up, but a draw back is my daughters coonhound is determined to eath the house, My concrete pens are inclosed inside my barn so they are better in the winter for being able to enclose easier. If someone will tell me how to add pics i will post some of mine also to give you ideas on how mine are

Jeremy...Great looking kennels.....Ben you must keep in mind the extreme cold weather and deep snow we have up here....you need to keep the bottom of the house close to the ground and insulated real well..that is where a hound is real vaunurable in the cold is thru the bottom....Slingblade...I at times had chewers and stop chew did seem to work......Must be a walker doing thatLOL...

Night Shift- the single kennel is about 3 1/2 ft from the ground to the floor in the front. I put it on the slope so the waste would wash toward the back. The platform is about 20" off the ground in the front. It is also on a slope. The back is about waist high so I can reach up under with rake if I need to.

...Slingblade...I at times had chewers and stop chew did seem to work......Must be a walker doing thatLOL... I have one female that chews. Isn't it great to go spend $75 - $100 on a box just to see a dog chew it up. I have tried the "no chew"and "apple bitter" stuff but it seems like to her it is like adding seasoning to the plastic. Oh well.

Yes Frank it is a Walker, did the annoying habits give it away? Slingblade I really like the single pen, it looks taller than it is in the pic

Ben, I know John's company does Kennels. www.snowcountrypets.com I think he might be able to give you some good advice if they can't help you out. If you wanted to go that route. Good luck.

hey ben if you go with wood, you may want to treat the floor a couple times a year with sealer or if your not environmentaly concerned used motor oil works great
