tracking collar question
hey evryone, i am looking to buy a set of tracking collars but i dont know much about them. i was thinking about getting the tracker supralight. i have also looked on ebay but it is hard to shop for something you dont know much about.does anyone have any sugestions. thanks.

hey Chris, I use the wildlife collar and reciever and have had great luck with it. I cant give an honest comparison from one system to another, but I will make these suggestions, Buy the best you can afford but remember range and ease of use are very important. I use the 2000 hour changable battery collar from wildlife, I prefer changable battery collars due to you dont have to send the unit in to have them changed, and leave you without a collar. The light weight collars for beagles are nice but you loose some range, besides those horses you hunt wont have any trouble carrying a bigger collar. Another thing to consider is weather you are gonna carry your reciever with you or not, if thats the case go small on the reciever and antanae, I leave mine in the truck so mine is huge, but its also 15 years old If you have any more questions just ask and myself or someone will gladly help

email me if interested. I have a used wildlife with two collars to sell. If your going for the best and latest you must look at the Garmin Astro. You won't believe what this tracking collar will do. $595 for the Astro with one collar, addditional collars are $199 will take up to 10.

i will have to get some more info from you at kevins hut if you will be there, untill then ill look into the wildlife collars. thanks.. jim, i have read about those garmin astro collars and they do seem pretty cool..from what i read about them they came off to be something more for bird dogs but i wasnt sure.

I think the Garmin Technology is awesome. What I dont like is the stiff antena between the dogs shoulders. I looks like it would give a brush bustin dog a real problem. But then what am I complaining about?

Dick Franck- 02-17-2008

I've had Jim's Garmin on my beagles and they work great, I have the Wildlife ones but I,m going to get the Garmin. You can see if they are coming back or going away and how many yards they are from you.

The tracker system is a great little unit! I swear by my Wildlife equipment!!!!!!I have the TRX model and carry it with me at all times.Unlike hunting in flat land , in the hillier terrain it saves alot of hiking back anf forth to the truck to get the reciever......Darn you JIM I looked this Garmin system over since you made me aware of it now It looks like I'll be spending some more money!!!!!!The one thing I think is holding me off is two things,,,I don't know the reliability of the system and the range...I know what the sales pitch is but I want to hear from the HOUNDSMEN&WOMEN what the real deal are...Jim could you shed some more light on that?I'd appreciate it....Thanks Hey Dick BEAGLES!!!!!!???????

Opening day of bird season my buddy turned loss a horse back field trial dog who hadn't been out for awhile. When he noticed that she was gone he pulled out his garmin astro and noticed that not only was she 1.9 miles from us but was also on point. We went back to the truck, followed the map leading us to her. Walked a hundred yards from the road straight to where she was on point and flushed the birds for her. I was also concerned about reception since I had been in the north woods with my Vista and no reception and Rich Gibson had his in the north woods snowhare hunting and no reception. We spent three days with the Astro hunting grouse and never lost track of the dogs. The location updates every 5 seconds. It also leaves a trail where your dog has run so you can see what kind of pattern the dog is running. It will allow you to mark the waypoint where your dog struck rabbit and you may forever after go back to that point. We have had issues with 2 parts of the equipment. First the antenna's have been a problem but not as a hindrance but they seem to come unscrewed. We bought the short ones thinking that would help and proceeded to lose them to. I have spoken with Garmin and they have replaced all antenna's free of charge to this point while they work on the problem. The other problem is the plate that screws on to form a holder for the dogs collar should you choose not to use the backstrap provided. They have since replaced these with a more durable material, You can also use this as a regular GPS by downloading on the micro card that inserts under the batteries. It also comes with electronic compass and altimeter. To date with have used it on Bassets, Beagles, bird dogs and coonhounds. You can enter the names of the dogs so that when you use the compass page, you immediately know which is the red pointer on the compass and which is the green and which is the blue etc.

To all that is interested in the Garmin Astro I have always thought it was a great idea but would not buy one because of the antenna! I knew if I waited, they would fix it. They have. They just came out with a new Collar to replace the big, bulky one they had. It looks like the ones we are used to with the other systems. The collar alone retails for $199. I found the new collar for the Astro, the DC30 for $155. Garmin will also offering a $50 rebate to Owners that have the old style collar registered with them. Thought you may be interested. http://www.jandhproducts.com/email_friend.aspx?sku=Garmin_DC_30_Dog_Collar I'll be buying one now! Any one interested in an Innotek Tracking System with 6 collars?

Chris Parker- 07-23-2008

thats weird that this post came up because i made it back in feb. but anyways, eric i might be interested in your old trackers. if you could post some info about them or pm me. thanks

Eric Figg- 07-23-2008

Hi Chris Its not wierd, I remembered that there had been a post earlier in the year for tracking collars and found your post. I posted here because my post is really just a continuation of this subject. No reason to create another thread for the same subject. It keeps the board more organized, so people can find things. Any older subject will come to the top again if a new post is made. I'll post some pics in the trading post as soon as I get some time to take them.

Garmin now has a collar that looks like a standard tracking collar --- should work for heavy brush hounds
