I am considering getting a basset for rabbit hunting. He will join my family of my wife, 5 year old, and a lab pup. Growing up we had labs and beagles. I have always liked the calmness of the Basset over the Beagle 'nutsness'.
I am wondering how bassets compare to beagles training wise? Also are there any solid hunting basset breeders near Appleton, WI? I would like to visit them to see if they are a good fit. I do not want to spend mega bucks, I will have those invested in the lab (Candlewood Kennels dog) [I had to recently put down our lab pup just a week short of his 1st birthday due to the onset of severe seizures and an abrupt resulting change in temperment... Just could not chance it with our daughter, so we will have a new lab coming from an upcomming litter]
Thanks for your insight and help!

Hello Matt
on training, you will find that bassets normally start later than beagles, but once started will run with beagles just fine. They also have a mind of thier own, if you say they will do something a certain way, they will make a point to prove you wrong.
I am not overly familiar with Wisconsin, but there is a hunt being held this weekend in the northern part of the state, info is posted on the board
You can also look in the state rep section, or the club section of the site. and find contact info for Jill and Dick Frank. They are fabulous people and i am sure would be more than willing to let you see thier dogs in action.
If any of us can be of any assistance, just let us know |
